What to Pack in Your Starter Box

It’s done. You’ve packed, had a great move (hopefully), and you just woke up for the first time in your new place.

But, you may ask, “Where’s my toothbrush?” Or, “My phone charger?” “The toilet paper?!?”

Good questions all – and easily answered with your Starter Box, a.k.a. First Day/Night kit. If you’ve planned ahead, this is no problem – it’s all right there in your Starter Box.

Don’t move without one.

It doesn’t have to be a box – it can be a bag, sack, or whatever. Ideally it’s something you can keep with you during the move. It gives you peace of mind and it’s convenient.

Here are some recommended items for this absolutely essential tool:

Clothing and Toiletries

Moving is kind of like going on a permanent vacation, so plan to have everything you’ll need to wake up, scrub up, and look fresh and ready to go. So, include your toothbrush/toothpaste, toilet paper, makeup, etc.

Bedding & Linens

Chances are, if you use My Truck Buddy at least, your bed will be assembled and ready for rest. So, make sure your linens and blankets and stuff are in the Starter Box. You may be sleeping amidst towers of other boxes, but at least you’ll be good to go for a full night’s rest. Trust us – after the relatively traumatic experience of moving, this little step can make a big difference.

Electronics

It probably doesn’t need to be said, but if you’re planning to just take it easy with some TV or tunes, you want to know where they are. More importantly, make sure all your essential cables are in one place. Particularly your phone charger. The other electronics cables should go into the boxes they’re packed in (and definitely pack up your electronics!).

Tools

The Leathermen – the tool with which I built the business

If you’ve got a lot of assembly work ahead of you, a simple Phillips head screwdriver and hex key (a.k.a. Allen wrench) will take care of 99% of it. If you want to go be able to handle anything from screws to a Red Dawn style invasion, pack a Leatherman tool.

Valuables

My Truck Buddy values integrity above all else. We train on it. It’s foundational to everything we do.

Still, whether you use us or someone else, it’s always a good idea to put your most valuable items into your Starter Box. It’ll give you peace of mind and remove any hint of shady behavior (and trust me – if there’s even a hint, meetings are triggered. Multiple meetings. Long meetings. Uncomfortable meetings.)

Valuables can also include rental agreements, closing docs, etc. Just because they’re not sparkly doesn’t mean they’re not valuable.

Food

You don’t have to go gourmet, but it’s a good idea to keep some Power Bars or other snacks.

There are a million other things you might need to have on-hand from minute one in your new place. Each person’s needs, like their moves, is different.
